The True Cost of Solar Power

What is the “True” Cost of Solar?

Most customers first question is: “How much will it cost me?” People who get solar end up saving much more than they spend, so the decision to get solar is often seen as an investment rather than an expense. Generally speaking, residential customers’ total investment can range anywhere from $10,000 to $100,000, where a $10,000 system will usually save customers $15,000-$50,000 and a $100,000 system will save well over $200,000—money that would have been spent on volatile and costly utility bills.

If a homeowner finances their solar system, the monthly payment on the total amount can range from $90 to $600 depending on the size of the system as well the type of financing (we’ll help you find what best matches you’re financing needs and desires). Often, we can design a system with monthly savings that are greater than your monthly expenses—which is extra cash in your pocket each month.

The real, or “true”, cost of your decision should be measured in dollars per kilowatt hour ($/kWh), which is how you pay for electricity usage now.  Breaking your cost into $/kWh allows you to compare the cost of solar to what you would pay your utility. The $/kWh cost of solar depends very largely upon available rebates, tax credits, and the complexity of the installation, which is why our energy consultants will provide you with a proposal that shows you exactly what solar would cost on a $/kWh basis.

As an example, in many areas a solar system will cost $0.09 / kWh, when the utility customer is already paying on average $0.20 / kWh. In this situation, it makes it very easy for the homeowner to see how he or she can save a lot of money.
