Fresno Living: Had a Tune-Up Lately…On Your Air Conditioner?

When it comes to a tune-up, most people immediately think of their vehicles. We know that if we want our vehicles to last, we need to take care of them, and that means getting them serviced on a regular basis to extend their life and prevent breakdowns. Taking care of our air conditioners is much the same – if we want them to last, and prevent a breakdown in the middle of a hot Fresno summer, they should be serviced on a regular basis.

What Does an Air Conditioner Tune-Up Entail?

There are several items that should be addressed when performing maintenance on your air conditioner. The most obvious to most people is changing out the air filter. The frequency of this action item depends on the quality of your air filter, but may need to happen as often as once a month. Over time, if the air filter is not replaced, it becomes clogged with dust which blocks the air flow of your central air conditioner or furnace. This causes the furnace and air conditioner to work harder to provide you the cool or warm air you seek.
Other action items include clearing the system of obstructions, cleaning the condensing coils, opening registers, and also replacing old service caps to avoid refrigerant leaks. Once all of these steps have been completed, the system can be tested to ensure that the refrigerant in your air conditioner is at the optimal level. If it is undercharged or overcharged, your system will not run at the optimal efficiency. This can be remedied by adding or removing refrigerant as appropriate, followed by another test to ensure the right level has been reached.

Keep Cool, Keep Your AC Maintained

If you live in places like Fresno or Sacramento, then you know that living without air conditioning is torture. And the hot season seems to start earlier every year – just last week (still mid-March) the temperature reached 85 degrees in Fresno. That’s not blazing, but with temperatures this warm this early in the year, it’s a sign of hot days to come. Your air conditioner will be working over time this summer to keep you cool. Be sure to keep it maintained to prevent costly repairs and miserable down time.
