Tips to Save Energy & Money During Quarantine

If you’re like most people, you’ve been spending a lot of time at home as of late and that gets really expensive! And why is that?  As much as you enjoy running your AC all day every day, it doesn’t really make fiscal sense to do so. Also, we all need to do our part to conserve energy. Here are 10 ways you can make sure your bill doesn’t skyrocket too much.

  1. Set your AC between 78-80 degrees. Raising the temperature of your home during the summer month will have a huge impact on lowering your cooling costs. 
  2. Turn the AC off or up about 10 degrees if you are going to be outside for a long time. You can use a smart thermostat to turn it off if you forgot to before you went outside. (Let us know if we can help you get a smart thermostat!)
  3. Turn the AC off at night and open your windows to let in the cool night air, then early in the morning, close them back up and shut the blinds. This should help keep your home cooler for longer, reducing the amount of time your AC is running throughout the day. 
  4. Try to use the oven less so you aren’t heating up your home too much, especially during the hottest hours of the day. 
  5. Set your AC to auto instead of having it run constantly.
  6. Make sure your air filter is clean. Having a dirty filter allows dirt and dust particles to get into your AC unit, making it draw more power to overcome the obstacle. 
  7. Keep the lights off as much as possible, while LEDs produce much less heat, some older or specialty bulbs put off quite a bit of heat. 
  8. Switch all light fixtures in your home to LED. LED bulbs cost much less to use than incandescent or halogen, and last longer as well. 
  9. Set your water heater to 120, this prevents wasting energy from keeping your water hot, as well as reduces the risk of injury from burns. 
  10. Wash your clothes in cold water. Many modern high-efficiency washers are made for using cold water.
